Creating a Healthy Work-Life Balance: Prioritizing Well-being in a Fast-Paced World
If we’re honest, most of us struggle with work-life balance often, and with good reason. Our lives are busier day by day, flooded with more demands, more information, and more calls for our attention.
So–what can we do about it? How do we establish a healthier approach to living and being in a world that seems so hectic? If we take the time to prioritize our well-being and our needs as a whole person, we’ll be well on our way to creating a healthy work-life balance for ourselves and our families. Everyone’s situation is different, and we all have different needs and priorities, but here are some ideas to help get you started on the road to a happier, more balanced way of living.
Let’s start with the most essential item in maintaining a healthy work-life balance: take care of your body! Our physical needs are foundational in our overall and mental health so attending to them must be a top priority. It takes many forms, but here are some potential action items when it comes to taking care of yourself physically:
- Get good exercise! Our jobs and lifestyles tend towards the passive lifestyle, so ensure that at least part of your day involves getting up and moving around. What this entails depends on you, your abilities, and your goals, but it can vary from an intense workout at your gym to a nice long walk in the evening. How you do it is up to you, but make sure your body gets moved around for at least part of the day!
- Eat right! While we all know that healthy eating is a foundational step in maintaining good health–and thus a good work/life balance–the sad fact is that a good diet is often the first casualty of a busy schedule. As with exercise, how you implement healthy eating in your own life is up to you, but ensuring that you’re eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, low in processed foods and sugars, and with adequate hydration is a big step towards balancing work, life, and everything else.
- Get good sleep! Our bodies need to sleep just as much as they need anything else, but as with other good habits sleep is often pushed to the side when things get busy. Talk to your doctor about what’s right for you, but a regular sleep schedule, a comfortable sleeping environment, and ensuring that there’s plenty of “wind-down” time in the evening all go a long way towards ensuring that our sleep is good, long, and refreshing.
So now that we’ve discussed our physical needs a bit, what’s left? It turns out that maintaining a healthy work-life balance involves ensuring that work and life are distinct things. Sure, work is part of life–many of us find our jobs rewarding part of our personal growth–but our jobs are not the whole of us. With that in mind, here are some tips for keeping work, life, and everything else in their proper places:
- Let’s start with an obvious step: keep work and life separate. In our interconnected world dominated by a barrage of notifications and information, it’s very easy to blur the line between work and our home lives. And while taking work home may occasionally be necessary, it needs to be the exception rather than the rule. When you leave work for the day, make sure you clock out mentally as well as physically and leave the job at the office as much as possible.
- Limiting screen time is another key step in keeping a healthy work-life balance. It entails avoiding your work email account or digital workspace during your off hours and weekends and also limiting overall screen time in favor of other pursuits. The internet is an amazing place and a powerful tool, but it can also be a source of stress, anxiety, and time-wasting. Take care to limit your screen time and you’ll be on the road to a better, more balanced lifestyle.
- Make real self-care a priority. Self-care is an oft-misused term–while spa days and beach vacations can indeed be self-care, so can ensuring that you’re budgeting appropriately to avoid financial stress, engaging in activities you enjoy, and surrounding yourself with healthy and supportive relationships. It can be a tall order–talking with a therapist doesn’t hurt–but it’s a big part of ensuring that we’re living our lives in balance overall. Invest some time in real self-care and you’ll see the benefits unfold in your work-life balance.
At the end of the day, we’re all complex people with our hopes, dreams, goals, and needs.
